Pieter Verduyn created a lower limb prosthetic that allowed users to bend their knee when walking. The “Father of Modern Prosthetics”, Ambroise Paré created a hinge knee with a lock control, both of which are still used today.

The catalyst for major advancements in prosthetics has often been war, especially in the US. The civil war brought about the use of non-wooden materials for comfort in the socket, made by the Salem Leg Company.
